GURUGRAM: The state minister for public works, forest and civil aviation, Rao Narbir Singh , on Wednesday, inaugurated the construction work on Badshapur elevated highway. There was a note of discord, though, as the construction agency, NHAI, distanced itself from the event because Union minister for road transport and highways, Nitin Gadkari , had already laid the foundation stone for the project in August last year.“NHAI had already laid the foundation stone for the project last year, we don’t do it twice,” said a senior NHAI official. There was another topic of discord. “The concessionaire began work today. We couldn’t have stopped them because the work has been awarded to them. But we haven’t given an official go-ahead, we’re yet to sign the contract with them,” said the NHAI official. The highways authority said they already have around 80% of the land for work to start with them. “We’re anticipating that work can officially start from October 15. There are encroachments on the alignment which need to be removed,” the official added. One part of the 9km-long project is the 5km-long elevated highway, which ends beyond the border of Badshapur village. This part alone will cost about Rs 707 crore. The second part of the project is to widen NH-248A to 6 lanes from Subhash Chowk to Sohna , with underpasses or flyovers to bypass villages along the way.Regarding encroachments that are yet to be removed, the NHAI official said, “The concession-aire can start work on the service road from Subhash Chowk side.”The spokesperson for Oriental , the concessionaire for the project, said, “We’re starting work on the ground. We’ve already carried out soil investigation and survey, and are currently working to relocate utilities.”
