Gurgaon: An imposter, Ram Prasad, who would pose as a cop and cheat innocent people, was denied bail on Tuesday.Police said Prasad, who was arrested on July 5 in connection with a case of cheating and fraud filed at City police station on June 27, used to dress like a policeman, take goods from shops and ask shopkeepers to collect the money from his home. And when the shopkeepers went to the address given by him, they didn’t find Prasad there. Following the same modus operandi, he had cheated several people in Gurgaon and adjoining areas.Denying his bail application, chief judicial magistrate (CJM) Abhishek Phutela, in his order, observed that the accused impersonated a cop to cheat people and breached the trust of common man in police. “The accused had maligned the image of the institution of police,” read the court order. It further stated he could not be granted bail because he was a serial offender and several cases of similar nature were registered against him at different places.A case for cheating, fraud and criminal intimidation was registered against him in Fatehabad district in 2017. A case of theft is pending against him in Dwarka Sector 23 police station, while he was declared proclaimed offender by a court in Bhiwani in a case filed at Bawani Khera police station. “The man, who used the police uniform to extract money, does not deserve any leniency and the police apprehension that he may commit similar offence and influence witnesses seems justified. So bail application is being dismissed,” the CJM added.Public prosecutor Sumit Saini said the Gurgaon police had arrested Prasad on July 5 following a complaint filed by Bhim Singh, the owner of shop Power Solution on Railway Road.In his complaint, Singh had alleged that Prasad had come to his shop and introduced himself as a head constable of the Haryana Police posted in Krukshetra on June 7. Then, he took away batteries worth Rs 90,000 from his shop. “He gave an address and asked us to collect the money from his home. When we went to collect the money, the address given by him turned out to be fake. Despite repeated calls, he failed to make the payment,” said Singh. Finally, Singh approached police for help on June 27.
