GURUGRAM: Notorious criminal Amit Dagar (32), a close ally of gang-lord Kaushal, gave Gurugram police the slip by escaping from the lock-up of the Sector 10 crime unit late night on Sunday. Fortunately for the police, he fractured his leg while fleeing and was recaptured after two hours from a nearby slum.Dagar, who carried a reward of over Rs 1 lakh on his head, was arrested on August 10 with two of his accomplices, after a brief encounter. He confessed to seven murders and over a dozen cases of extortion, and was sent to judicial custody in Bhondsi jail , from where cops had taken him on remand for questioning in different cases. It may be noted that Dagar is a big catch, who Gurugram police believe can lead them to gang leader Kaushal, who is still on the run.Dagar came into the limelight in 2006, when he and Kaushal were identified as key accused in the gangland shootout at Rajiv Chowk where gangster Chailu was shot dead. After gangster Sandeep Gadoli was killed in a fake police encounter, Dagar and Kaushal allegedly got in touch with Gadoli’s family, and thereafter joined hands with another infamous gangster Surender Geong. With Geong, he was involved in many murders, murder attempts and extortion cases, for which they also lifted many vehicles. He was also allegedly involved in the 2016 murder of gangster Mahesh alias Attack. Recently, he was accused of having made extortion calls to many businessmen, property dealers and bookies, even while he was lodged in jail.On November 6, the Sector 10 crime unit had taken him on production remand in a case of extortion that was registered on November 3. He was in their lock-up on Sunday night. Around 9.20pm, Dagar asked constable Ankur, who was on guard duty at the lock-up, for permission to go to the washroom. According to police, while on way to the washroom, Dagar pushed Ankur and fled by jumping over the wall of the crime unit office. Over 40 local and crime unit cops were immediately divided into teams to launch a search operation, which lasted for two hours.Soon, DCP (crime) Sumit Kuhar and other senior officials reached the spot and joined the combing operation in the slum behind the crime unit office. Around two hours later, they located the criminal, who tried to run away again, but was caught when he slipped and fractured his knee. Cops took him to Civil Hospital, from where he was reportedly referred to Delhi’s Safdurjung Hospital on Monday morning. As per the complaint filed by head constable Manoj Kumar , an FIR was later registered against Dagar under Section 224 (resistance or obstruction to lawful apprehension of another person) of IPC at Sector 10A police station. In his complaint, the head constable wrote, “It was when he had gone to the washroom that he made the attempt to flee. The cop on lock-up duty immediately raised the alarm.”Apart from the sloppy police work that led to his escape, what has raised many eyebrows is Dagar’s presence in the Sector 10 crime unit lock-up, while sources said he was taken on remand by the crime unit of Sector 17. DCP Kuhar though rejected the allegation, saying it was the crime unit of Sector 10 that was questioning him. “He was in the custody of Sector 10 crime unit, and hid in the nearby slums after his escape. We acted swiftly and recaptured him within two hours. He had to be taken to hospital as he had fractured his leg,” said DCP Kuhar.
