Rain helps Gurugram breathe easier, pollution drops

GURUGRAM: Late night showers on Tuesday brought some respite to the city as the air quality index ( AQI ) fell to ‘poor’ level at 254 on Wednesday from Tuesday’s 313 (very poor). The 24-hour average of PM2.5 also came down to 103 micrograms per cubic metre on Wednesday from 167 micrograms per cubic metre on Tuesday, according to the data collected by Central Pollution Control Board.On Wednesday also, the city remained the least polluted in NCR. All other NCR cities reported ‘very poor’ pollution levels. While Ghaziabad recorded the AQI at 352 (very poor), Delhi and Faridabad logged it at 312 and 339 respectively. In Noida the AQI was recorded at 332 and in Greater Noida 348.The officials of Haryana State pollution Control Board (HSPCB) claimed that proper implementation of graded response action plan (GRAP) to combat air pollution worked well. “For the last two weeks, AQI in Gurugram has remained the lowest in Delhi-NCR during the day. All departments are working hard to ensure proper implementation of GRAP measures. Also, water sprinkling has helped to a large extent in dispersing particulate matters from the lower atmosphere,” said an official of HSPCB The Met department also said the wind direction had helped disperse particulate matters to some extent. “The wind direction is helping to disperse particulate matters in cities located on the western side. However, the situation may change as a dip in temperature is expected,” said an official of the Met department.According to the SAFAR forecast, the AQI is expected to rise to ‘very poor’ level on Thursday and might remain so till Saturday.According to the Met forecast, the temperature is likely to come down by two to three notches. The maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 27°C and 15°C respectively on Thursday. On Wednesday, the maximum temperature in Gurugram was recorded at 30.2°C while the minimum was 17.2°C.
