MCG to buy used plastic, build roads with it

GURUGRAM: MCG plans to set up plastic collection centres across the city and buy used plastic at Rs 10 per kg. The plastic collected would be used to build bituminous roads , said MCG commissioner Yashpal Yadav on Thursday at a waste management workshop in the city.Yadav said, “We are planning a study on the use of plastic in making roads and a team of officials will soon be sent to Bangalore in this regard.” He added that the roads made with plastic would be of better quality and even last longer.Plastic has already been used in making roads in several cities such as Bangalore and Kolkata. The process involves melting plastic at very high temperatures and blending the same with the bitumen aggregator.Officials are hopeful that the process would not just improve the quality of roads but also help reduce pollution due to the use of plastic in the city.On solid waste management in Gurugram, the MCG commissioner said that people needed to take more responsibility with regard to the waste that they generated. “We are encouraging more and more societies to adopt composting so that waste can be dealt with in a decentralised way,” said Yadav.He also awarded a few residents for good waste management practices on Thursday at the event organised by a Gurugram-based NGO, Gurgaon First, in association with MCG.The workshop saw experts, RWA and MCG officials participating in discussions on the best practices in waste management.
