Gurugram: Wind helps improve AQI, relief may be short-lived

The air quality index was at 162 (moderate) on Thursday — the cleanest day in the last six weeks. “As the air quality has been in the moderate to poor levels, appropriate GRAP measures will be in force now. “An increase in the wind speed on Saturday morning has helped disperse particulate matter in the lower atmospheric level. On Saturday, Greater Noida was the most polluted among the NCR cities with an AQI level of 286, followed by Noida (275), Faridabad (273), Delhi (267) and Ghaziabad (264) — all in the poor category. On Friday, too, Gurugram was the least polluted in the region, with Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad recording AQI in the ‘poor’ category, while Faridabad was the only NCR city with AQI in the ‘very poor’ category.Weathermen attributed the improvement in air quality to an increase in wind speed.

Gurugram: Air quality improved on Saturday with the AQI sliding back to the moderate level, making Gurugram the least polluted city in NCR.The Met department said a sudden increase in the wind speed had made the situation better, but the air quality might deteriorate again over the next couple of days.The city on Saturday recorded AQI at 188 (moderate), as against 235 (poor) a day before. The air quality index was at 162 (moderate) on Thursday — the cleanest day in the last six weeks. The 24-hour average of PM2.5 concentration was recorded at 103µg/m³. The ‘safe’ limit for PM2.5 is 60 µg/m³. On Saturday, Greater Noida was the most polluted among the NCR cities with an AQI level of 286, followed by Noida (275), Faridabad (273), Delhi (267) and Ghaziabad (264) — all in the poor category. On Friday, too, Gurugram was the least polluted in the region, with Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad recording AQI in the ‘poor’ category, while Faridabad was the only NCR city with AQI in the ‘very poor’ category.Weathermen attributed the improvement in air quality to an increase in wind speed. “An increase in the wind speed on Saturday morning has helped disperse particulate matter in the lower atmospheric level. But, both pollution and fog are likely to increase in the city as wind direction is all set to change course in next two days,” said a Met official.However, the Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) has relaxed the measures listed under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) for the ‘poor’ air quality. “As the air quality has been in the moderate to poor levels, appropriate GRAP measures will be in force now. A ll efforts will continue to prevent any increase in the pollution levels,” said an official at the HSPCB.According to the GRAP, some of the measures for the current level are periodic mechanised sweeping, strict monitoring of thermal plants and visibly polluting vehicles, and controlling dust at construction sites.
