Gurgaon-based social worker Ravi Kalra’s NGO, which works for abandoned senior citizens, received a huge shot in the arm last week when Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan donated Rs 50 lakh to it. The Gurgaon resident had met Bachchan last month on the hot seat of the popular game show Kaun Banega Crorepati . Kalra had appeared on the finale episode of this season of KBC last month, where he won Rs 25 lakh for his NGO Earth Saviours Foundation. The Gurgaon resident was on the show in the Karmveer episode which saw social workers and philanthropists on the hot seat trying to win money for their cause, supported by one celebrity partner. In Kalra’s case, his partner was popular comedian Kapil Sharma In a letter addressed to Kalra, Bachchan wrote, “It was a moving experience for me and indeed all present during the KBC Karmveer programme that you honoured us with, some days back. Hearing you narrate your stories was the most horrifying moment for all.”Kalra’s story had visibly moved the superstar and on the show itself, Amitabh Bachchan had promised Kalra that he would visit his old age home in Badhwari Village with his family. The visit might still be a while away but Big B has fulfilled his promise of helping Kalra’s cause with a donation of Rs 50 lakh. In the letter he added, “As committed during the programme, I am attaching herewith my contribution towards the noble cause that you undertake for the deprived.”After getting the promised money in the form of demand drafts, Kalra says, “Bachchan ji had said that he would help me in any way he could, and last week, he donated Rs50 lakh on behalf of himself and his entire family. He says he will bring everyone to Badhwari as soon as they find time. It’s such a great gesture by him,” Kalra says.Kalra says that the money he won on the show as well as Bachchan’s donation will now be put to use in expanding the infrastructure of the old age home, which has been short-staffed for quite a while. But more than the money, he has been thankful for the exposure the show gave him. “So many people have called in since the show aired to pledge support and several have donated too. At least a dozen elderly people called to say they had been contemplating suicide but after watching the show, they now want to live with us. We are trying to help with their counselling and rehabilitation,” Kalra says before signing off.Amitabh Bachchan wrote to Ravi Kalra and sent his contribution in the form of demand drafts of Rs 50 lakh
