Path to better roads: Pvt agencies, 1-year contracts

“While we’re working on several new projects, we also have to maintain the existing road network, to give city roads an uniform look. While master and sector roads will be taken care of by GMDA, the onus of maintenance and repair of internal roads remain with MCG. That’s why we’ll be outsourcing the maintenance work to hired agencies,” said GMDA chief engineer Jitender Mittal.Multiple projects, to strengthen, upgrade and decongest roads are under way. GURUGRAM: GMDA has announced it will hire agencies for the maintenance and repair of all master roads in the city, such as MG Road and Southern Peripheral Road, on an annual basis. Mittal added GMDA has recently opened eight tenders for hiring maintenance agencies.

For harassed residents, this should bring relief from the bumpy rides they have to encounter every day. The agency will fill up potholes, do patchwork repairs on them and also paint roadside beams.GMDA will announce fresh tenders every year and allot the maintenance work to the agency with the lowest bid. Once appointed, the agency will have the contract for a year. “While we’re working on several new projects, we also have to maintain the existing road network, to give city roads an uniform look. That’s why we’ll be outsourcing the maintenance work to hired agencies,” said GMDA chief engineer Jitender Mittal.Multiple projects, to strengthen, upgrade and decongest roads are under way. While the new authority is already working on projects at Huda City Centre and Mahavir Chowk, some new projects are expected to be proposed at the executive committee meeting in February. Mittal added GMDA has recently opened eight tenders for hiring maintenance agencies. The winners of the tenders will start work from March. “We already have agencies doing this work, who were hired for six months to start with. However, we have now made it an annual contract,” said Mittal.For six months, GMDA will be spending around Rs 10 crore, whereas the cost of tenders for a year will be around Rs 20 crore, and cover all master and sector roads in the city which have been transferred to GMDA. The new authority has recently taken over 12 major roads from MCG , and started repair and maintenance work on all these stretches.The 12 stretches include Civil Lines road from Rajiv Chowk to Civil Lines bus stand, Jharsa road between CR Model School Chowk and Mor Chowk, Mata road, MG Road, Pataudi road (New Colony Mor to MCG limit), Manesar Sec tor 8 to Pataudi road, road between sectors 100 and 101, road between sectors 9A and 10, road between sectors 8 and 9A, road between sectors 11A and 12, and four others. While master and sector roads will be taken care of by GMDA, the onus of maintenance and repair of internal roads remain with MCG.
