Gurugram traffic cops to get weekly offs

All traffic unit in-charges have been asked to prepare a duty roster to decide weekly offs for cops so that they can spend time with their families,” he added.Apart from the off-days, Gurugram police have introduced several other measures to reduce the stress levels of traffic cops like giving them adequate rest during duty hours.“There is no need for traffic cops to stand on their feet throughout the day. As traffic load on roads during weekends is relatively low, we have decided to give weekly offs to half of the 1,700 force on Saturday and the remaining half the day after,” said Rao.“The move is aimed at creating a good work environment to reduce stress levels of cops. An off day is usually taken with the permission of a senior but service rules don't guarantee that as a right. Note down the registration number, alert the next check post and send challans by post,” he added.

With fewer vehicles on the roads on weekends, half of the traffic police force will get an off on Saturday while the other half will get it on Sunday, police commissioner KK Rao announced on Saturday.The job of a cop is one of the most stressful in the country but has no provision for a designated weekly off. An off day is usually taken with the permission of a senior but service rules don't guarantee that as a right. As compensation, policemen are paid a 13-month salary per annum.Weekly offs and eight-hour shifts were part of the recommendations of the Dharam Vira Commission on police reforms but those are yet to be fully adopted several decades on.Though Haryana Police introduced weekly off for cops in May 2016, but it was restricted to those posted at police stations.“Now, traffic cops , including home guards and special police officers, will also get a weekly off. As traffic load on roads during weekends is relatively low, we have decided to give weekly offs to half of the 1,700 force on Saturday and the remaining half the day after,” said Rao.“The move is aimed at creating a good work environment to reduce stress levels of cops. During morning and evening rush hours, their presence is important, but during non-peak hours they can take some rest and monitor traffic from corner booths,” the police chief said.“Some 40 traffic booths have already been set up at different junctions of the city for cops and another 60 will come up soon,” he said, adding that the cops could also opt for posting in other departments if they desired.Moreover, the commissioner has directed cops to refrain from putting their lives at risk by jumping in front of errant vehicles. “If someone does not stop at check posts, do not come in front of the vehicle to stop it. Note down the registration number, alert the next check post and send challans by post,” he added.
