GURUGRAM: The MCG has decided to start imposing fines on owners of households if they fail to segregate waste. A fine of Rs 100 has been decided upon for a single offence. The civic body has also said that if the waste is not segregated, it will not be collected from households.Citing solid waste management rules, MCG officials said waste segregation at source was mandatory and the rule also applied to bulk waste generators.“We are still in the process of spreading awareness about segregation. Once we have completed the campaign, we will start issuing fines to those who do not segregate the waste at source,” said a senior MCG official. The waste has to be segregated into two categories — dry waste and wet waste. Wet waste includes biodegradable items such as fruits, vegetables and leftover food. This waste will be taken to the Bandhwari waste site and turned into compost . Apart from these two, hazardous waste has to be stored separately. Hazardous waste includes medical residue such as medicines, syringes, paints or pesticides.Dry waste, which includes paper, plastic and other recyclable items, need to be put into a blue bin. Most of this waste will be recycled or taken away by rag pickers who have been recently integrated into Gurugram’s waste management system. The waste segregation and composting at Bandhwari has not yet begun as the site receives unsegregated waste. Ecogreen officials said they are about to start the Ballistic separator at the site, which will segregate the waste. However, there are major concerns about the implementation of the whole system. Sources said many of the waste collecting vehicles do not have compartments to carry segregated waste separately. Also, the officials are worried that it will take a long time before people willingly start segregating their waste at the source.Meanwhile, MCG has identified 19 agencies to help the bulk waste generators segregate their waste at source. Regular notices and challans are also being issued to offenders. The civic body has issued notices to over 300 bulk generators and challans to around 100 in the past couple of months.“We are continuously monitoring and issuing challans to bulk waste generators who are not segregating the waste in keeping with the solid waste management rules,” the official said.
