GMDA gets land, work on Gurugram’s first government medical college to begin

GURUGRAM: If the government has its way, the city will get its first state-run medical college in three years’ time. The medical college will be developed by GMDA, and the cost will be borne by GMDA, MCG and Sheetla Mata shrine board. With the appointment of the consultant, officials hope that the work on the medical college will start soon.According to the GMDA’s plan, the medical college project will be executed in two phases. The GMDA has started preparing the master plan for Sheetla Mata Devi Medical College, which will also have a hospital wing, near Dwarka Expressway in Sector 102.The MCG has already transferred the land earmarked for the college in Kherki Majra to the development authority. “We have appointed a consultant to prepare the masterplan, and once it submits that we will proceed with other work,” said a GMDA official.

The project was announced by CM Manohar Lal Khattar last April.Also, a consultant has been appointed for preparing the plan and concept study of the project, which will cost around Rs 300 crore, according to sources. The contract for consultancy has gone to Uttar Pradesh Nirman Nigam, which has been told to complete the project in 36 months. The medical college will be developed by GMDA, and the cost will be borne by GMDA, MCG and Sheetla Mata shrine board. “We have appointed a consultant to prepare the masterplan, and once it submits that we will proceed with other work,” said a GMDA official. The bid for the consultant was first invited almost a year ago, in February 2018.GMDA officials told TOI that besides the master plan and concept note, the agency will carry out architectural planning, detailed project report and fire safety plan. It will also supervise the work, engage contractors for execution and procure environmental clearance.Government sources said MCG handed over land for the project to GMDA a few months ago, but the work has been pending since then. With the appointment of the consultant, officials hope that the work on the medical college will start soon.According to the GMDA’s plan, the medical college project will be executed in two phases. In the first phase, it will have an air-conditioned super specialty hospital with 500 beds, a block for infectious diseases and another for radiotherapy. The first phase will also have a trauma centre with 50 beds among other amenities.In the second phase, an organ transplant centre with 30 beds, department of nuclear medicine with 30 beds, department of biotechnology, department of experimental medicine and an advance research centre incorporating genetics, immunology and virology will be built.While the project was announced by the state government long back, it was officially announced in April 2018 along with a proposal to redevelop Sheetla Mata temple in Gurugram.According to sources, the medical college with classrooms and labs will be built in the first phase of the project itself. Initially, the college will admit 150 students. An official said the government’s priority is to start the enrolment of students as soon as possible.
