GURUGRAM: In another year and a half, Gurugram will have NCR’s biggest flower market, according to government sources. The state government is in the process of signing a pact with the Netherlands in this regard. Spread over 10 acres, the flower market will be jointly developed by Haryana Marketing Board and Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority. Around 11 acres of land was recently allotted for the project in Sector 52, Wazirabad . Of this, only 10 acres will be used for the flower market.Haryana agriculture minister OP Dhankar told TOI that the flower market would have “international facilities”. “We are in an advanced stage of talks with the Netherlands regarding the project. Their agriculture minister has visited us and we have also visited their country,” said Dhankar. He added that inspiration would be taken from Royal Flora in the Netherlands —the world’s largest flower conglomerate with multiple flower auctions and markets.According to estimates, Royal Flora sells around 20 million flowers on a daily basis and most of the Dutch flower trade takes place through the same. The market will give a platform to local farmers to showcase and sell their flowers. The total cost of the project is around Rs 50 crore and it will be ready within a year and a half, according to the minister. The market will have space for display, auction and sale of flowers. There will be closed shops with display, sorting, storage and cooling areas. There will also be open stalls and platforms. Sellers can opt for any facility, according to their convenience. Additionally, there will be an exhibition area where flower shows and seminars will be held.A senior official with Haryana Marketing Board said that besides infrastructure, there would be special focus on technology.“We will use technology to keep track of stock of flowers with each vendor and purchases made by customers. This will help us understand the demand and supply patterns,” said the official. While there will be an array of homegrown flower species, several imported flowers will also be put up for sale. Officials said that the market’s proximity to the airport would benefit vendors.
