Fridge’s drip pan a mosquito-breeding hotspot in households, finds MCG survey

GURUGRAM: A survey conducted by the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram ( MCG ) has found that the maximum number of mosquito breeding spots in households are in the drip pans of refrigerators.Brahm Prakash Sandhu, chief medical officer at the civic body, said every third household has a problem with the water-collecting trays of the fridges. Officials have asked the residents to take precautionary measures like tilting the coolers when not in use so that water does not collect in them. However, officials said they will increase the manpower this summer.

Other areas that have been found to breeding grounds for mosquitoes include non-functional air coolers and empty planters.MCG is currently conducting a city-wide survey to locate main spots that can possibly become a mosquito breeding ground and its types.The survey reveals that mosquito breeding is relatively high in upscale areas like Sector 56, Sector 45, Udyog Vihar 5, Sector 23 and Old Gurugram near Sadar Bazaar. “These are high-density areas, which could be one of the reasons for the higher number of breeding cases reported from these neighbourhoods,” said Sandhu.A similar trend was observed last year when a substantial number of dengue cases were reported from upscale areas like DLF 1,2,3,4 and 5 along with, Sushant Lok-1, Golf Course Road and New Palam Vihar.Health officials said people let water stagnate in their tanks and water pots and do not clean them regularly.According to the data from the MCG, over 230 suspected cases of dengue were reported in the city in 2018.
