After NGT panel’s rap, Haryana government to examine sewage flowing into Badshapur drain

Gurgaon: Haryana chief secretary D S Dhesi on Sunday formed a joint inspection committee to monitor quality of water being discharged into the Badshapur drain . “The committee will assess quality of water being discharged into Badshapur drain and submit a report within 15 days,” said Dhesi. On Sunday, Dhesi directed Gurgaon divisional commissioner Mohammad Saeen to monitor work on a 600m stretch of the drain between NH-8 and Khandsa village, with April 30 as the deadline for completion of all work on the Badshapur drain. While we sealed two of these units, we’ve issued notices to the rest.”The NGT monitoring committee had observed that sewage waste was merging with Yamuna water, polluting it. Similar concerns were shared with other neighbouring states such as Uttar Pradesh.The directions had come from NGT last year.

This follows in the heels of directions from the NGT monitoring committee, consisting of Bikram Singh Sajwan and former Delhi chief secretary Shailja Chandra, asking the state to stop the discharge of non-treated sewage into stormwater drains.Dhesi announced the formation of the committee under Haryana State Pollution Control Board regional chief Shakti Singh, with members from MCG and GMDA, while chairing an interdepartmental meeting in Gurgaon. “The committee will assess quality of water being discharged into Badshapur drain and submit a report within 15 days,” said Dhesi. He added that as per NGT orders, it’s to be ensured that no untreated sewage or industrial waste is discharged into the drain.The committee will check whether industries in the city have effluent treatment plants, and if these plants are functional. “The committee will also collate all communication sent to MCG and GMDA in the matter till date and send the bodies reminders on it as well,” said Dhesi.Talking about industrial units in the city, Singh said, “Of the 56 industrial units we’ve inspected in the last few months, nine were violating norms for discharge of industrial effluents. While we sealed two of these units, we’ve issued notices to the rest.”The NGT monitoring committee had observed that sewage waste was merging with Yamuna water, polluting it. GMDA chief V Umanshankar, who was also present at the meeting, said to check discharge of sewage waste into Badshapur and other stormwater drains, MCG has drawn up a plan to install 30 small sewage treatment plants (STPs) across the city.Badshapur drain starts from Ghata, passes through Sohna road and NH-8 to meet Najafgarh drain, which ultimately empties into the Yamuna in Delhi. On Sunday, Dhesi directed Gurgaon divisional commissioner Mohammad Saeen to monitor work on a 600m stretch of the drain between NH-8 and Khandsa village, with April 30 as the deadline for completion of all work on the Badshapur drain.
