100kg of gold worth Rs 35cr seized without papers, 4 held by I-T dept

Ghaziabad: Over 100kg of gold, worth around Rs 35 crore, was seized in Modinagar’s Kadrabad on Friday. Police said the gold was being transported in an armoured vehicle from Delhi to Haridwar. “On Friday morning, we received information that a huge consignment of gold was being transported. “Moreover, there was considerable delay between the time the gold was received and transported. As the matter was related to the income tax department, their officials were alerted,” he added.Four persons – the van driver, a cashier and two security guards – were detained and later handed over to the IT officials.

The cops have alerted the income tax department, which has ordered an investigation into the source of the gold.SSP Upendra Kumar Agrawal said that in view of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, various police teams and special squads have been conducting checks. “On Friday morning, we received information that a huge consignment of gold was being transported. The vehicle was stopped at Modinagar. As the matter was related to the income tax department, their officials were alerted,” he added.Four persons – the van driver, a cashier and two security guards – were detained and later handed over to the IT officials. Additional director in the income tax department (investigation) Sanjay Kumar Lal said the consignment had been seized as the persons in the van were not carrying required documents at a time the model code of conduct is imposed.There were no purchase invoices or any authorisation letter. “Moreover, there was considerable delay between the time the gold was received and transported. All these things require a thorough investigation to establish the source of gold,” Lal added.The carrier company, Kundan Care Products Ltd, put the consignment at around 80kg.“The consignments were in fact cleared after paying Custom Duty at Delhi Airport. The goods are currently being transported to our Haridwar. All the requisite documents including Import Invoice and Bill of Entry are being accompanied with the consignment,” the company said in a statement.
