‘Mastermind’ of Gurugram family attack arrested

GURUGRAM: The mastermind of the March 21 attack on a family belonging to a minority community in Bhondsi’s Bhoop Singh Nagar was arrested on Sunday, according to police.The arrest came on a day when the family submitted a new video clip to police that purportedly shows one of the attackers using a pistol.Dhirender, alias Dhire, who runs a dairy in the area, is the second person to be arrested in the case. He will be produced in court on Monday, said police spokesperson Subhash Boken. On Friday, the police had arrested Mahesh (22), a college student from Nayagaon, near Bhondsi. He is in police custody.Police further said they have identified four other accused, also suspected to be from Nayagaon, and they are expected to be arrested soon.Broken window glasses after attackOn Thursday, the day of Holi, a mob of 12 had attacked the two-storey house of Mohammad Dilshad (32), in which Mohammad Sajid lived with his wife and six kids, after a dispute over a cricket match. The police complaint filed by Dilshad stated that the youths pelted stones at the house and vandalised motorbikes. When the group entered the building, the men in the family sent the women and children to the terrace. From there, one of the women, Danishta (21), shot three videos, one of which went viral on social media.An FIR was registered on Thursday night at Bhondsi police station against unknown attackers, under sections 147 (rioting), 148 (unlawful assembly), 452 (trespassing), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 307 (attempt to murder) of IPC.The group of 12 people attacked two-storey housePolice said Dhirender had confessed that he was the one who had called other people to attack the family with sticks, a spear and hockey sticks. According to police, Dhirender revealed that he was at his dairy when two boys from Nayagaon who had an argument with some boys playing cricket came to him. “The two boys narrated the entire incident. I was at my dairy along with my friends. We called a few other people and attacked the house of the family with lathis,” the police quoted Dhirender as saying.Meanwhile, Dilshad, whose family was attacked, said they had met police officials at Bhondsi police station to submit the new video. “We have submitted whatever evidence (in the form of video) to police and are waiting for it to act on it,” he said.In the 2.19-minute-long video, shot from the rooftop of the victims’ house, a man wearing a white shirt can be seen firing from a pistol at some of the family members — mostly women and children — who were hiding on the second-floor terrace. No one, however, was injured by the gunshot.Cops have said that no group or outfit was involved in the incident. “We are working on sources to identify others. We will complete the investigation at the earliest,” DCP (south) Himanshu Garg said.Police are also analysing the video footage. “We have identified some people. Efforts are being taken to verify their involvement in the incident,” added Garg.Meanwhile, the villagers are unhappy that the incident has been “given communal colour”. They say the incident was merely a conflict between two groups of boys. “People have been living in this village peacefully. It has no history of communal tension. No such incident was reported in the past. It was a conflict between two groups of young boys,” said Sudhir Yadav, a villager.“They are local boys,” another villager said, adding that they have no affiliation with any group, and no case had ever been reported against them.The area has 4-5 families from the minority community.
