GURUGRAM: The discom DHBVN , on Sunday told TOI that it has installed around 200 transformers , of capacity 200kVA each, in the city over the last three months, as part of its drive to ramp up the capacity of power infrastructure. The areas where additions have been made are sectors 16, 17, 21, 22, 23, 39, 41, 55 and 66.With around five lakh consumers, the current power demand in the city stands at 140 lakh units per day.In 2018, the city added around 20,000 new consumers. While the highest demand in 2017 was 288 lakh units per day, the highest demand in 2018 touched 309 lakh units per day.The officials expect this ceiling to be breached in 2019.“In our annual maintenance drive, we have replaced power cables, bifurcated feeders wherever necessary and installed close to 200 transformers across Gurugram, at a cost of Rs 1.5 lakh each,” a senior DHBVN official said.“Last year’s survey, to identify areas that face more power crises, revealed that in some areas, residents draw more power than permitted, putting a strain on the local infrastructure and causing transformers to either blow fuse or trip. Every transformer has a load meter attached to it, which not only allow us to regulate power, but also to monitor ebb and flow in demand. Based on data from these, we decide which areas need more transformers.”Officials said in many cases transformers were replaced, while in others, new ones were installed.“We are expecting demand to soar in 2019.
