Gurgaon: The MCG has decided to establish ‘model wards’ for solid waste management after heavy criticism from the National Green Tribunal (NGT) over “inefficient waste management” in the city. They will be then integrated into the system. In order to make these wards ‘model wards’, at least five composting units and a material recovery facility will be set up in each of the four wards. While composting units will take care of biodegradable waste, recovery facilities will be used for the collection of other recyclable waste, such as metal, plastic or paper. He added that the survey will also identify unauthorised ragpickers, if any, in these wards. After NGT directed the corporation to chalk up an action plan on solid waste management, MCG commissioner Yashpal Yadav had told TOI that they plan to cut down the volume of waste going to Bandhwari by 50% in coming months.

Gurgaon: The MCG has decided to establish ‘model wards’ for solid waste management after heavy criticism from the National Green Tribunal (NGT) over “inefficient waste management” in the city. In the first phase, the corporation will choose four wards , one in each zone, and set up at least five composting units in each of them. The decision was taken at a roundtable meeting headed by MCG commissioner Yashpal Yadav on Tuesday. To begin with, a team from MCG will conduct a survey in the four selected wards to understand the quantity and quality of waste generated and estimate the manpower and resources required. The data will be collected within a week’s time from now, and then the project will be kicked off. “The idea is to ensure maximum waste treatment and composting at the community level itself so that waste doesn’t go to landfills,” said an MCG official in the know of the matter. He added that the survey will also identify unauthorised ragpickers, if any, in these wards. MCG will also empanel recycling agencies, which will recycle waste collected at recovery facilities. The expenses of the setting up the composting unit will be borne by bulk waste generators in these wards, while operation costs will be paid with the help of user charges taken from residents.MCG plans to finish the process in the four wards within the next three weeks, so that it can implement the same model in other wards as well. After NGT directed the corporation to chalk up an action plan on solid waste management, MCG commissioner Yashpal Yadav had told TOI that they plan to cut down the volume of waste going to Bandhwari by 50% in coming months.
