When they returned home, a group of men came and attacked their house, pelting stones and vandalising motorbikes. “First they attack our boys and now police is not registering our case,” he said. Mohammad Akram, one of the members, said no one has approached the family for any compromise and the families of the accused have been mobilising villagers.

GURUGRAM: A day after police said it had arrested 10 people directly involved in the March 21 mob attack on a Muslim family in Bhondsi’s Bhoop Singh Nagar, two versions of the incidents leading up to it have emerged, after an injured youth who had gone missing surrendered late Tuesday night. The youth, Rajkumar, alleged that the Muslim family had initiated the attack and hit him. In a video purportedly recorded on the day of the incident, he is seen getting treatment for head injuries at a private hospital in Sohna. His statement to the police could lead to a counter-FIR being filed in the case.On Holi, 12 men had attacked the two-storey house of Mohammad Dilshad (32), in which his uncle Mohammad Sajid lived with his wife and six kids, after a dispute over a cricket match. According to Rajkumar’s statement and the new video clip, he and his brother Mahesh were passing through Bhoop Singh Nagar on a bike on the afternoon of Holi when a cricket ball hit him (Rajkumar) in the stomach. They stopped and had an argument with 10-12 boys who were playing in an open field. There was a scuffle and one of the boys from the team hit Rajkumar on the head with a cricket bat while his brother Mahesh was thrashed badly, said the statement. The youths then rushed to Nayagaon, about one-and-a-half km away, and narrated the incident to their family and the villagers. Within an hour, nearly 20 youths assembled at a diary run by Dhirender, the alleged mastermind, and marched towards Bhoop Singh Nagar to attack the Muslim family with lathis and hockey sticks, according to Rajkumar’s statement. The police complaint filed by Dilshad had said his family members were playing cricket when some boys came on a bike and shouted at them and said ‘Go back to Pakistan’. When they returned home, a group of men came and attacked their house, pelting stones and vandalising motorbikes. When the group entered the building, the men in the family sent the women and children to the terrace. From there, one of the women, Danishta (21), shot three videos, one of which went viral on social media. An FIR was registered the same night at Bhondsi police station against unknown attackers, under Sections 147 (rioting), 148 (unlawful assembly), 452 (trespassing), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 307 (attempt to murder) of IPC.Late Tuesday night, the villagers of Nayagaon met Sohna MLA Tejpal Tanwar to put forth their grievances. They reiterated their demand for a cross-FIR . Satpal, a villager, alleged cops were harassing women and elders. “First they attack our boys and now police is not registering our case,” he said. Roshan Bhadana, Rajkumar’s neighbour, said Mahesh, the first to be arrested, was picked up by police on March 21 from a hospital where he was being treated. But police, he alleged, showed his arrest on March 22 and did not mention anything about his injury or register his statement. Police said they are examining Rajkumar’s statement and injury and will take appropriate action if necessary. “We have taken his statement and medical report on record and are verifying it,” DCP (south) Himanshu Garg said, adding Rajkumar is an accused and the police cannot take his statement at face value. The Muslim family, meanwhile, said they are living under constant fear. Cops are still stationed outside their house and several relatives have visited them. Mohammad Akram, one of the members, said no one has approached the family for any compromise and the families of the accused have been mobilising villagers.
