In the next 10 years, the industry is going to transform for sure, (it will become) more consumer-centric. The way the industry is placed, we are trying to build an online tech-driven plan which is far more cheaper and accessible. An unhappy experience involving loved ones led Satkam Divya to set up KlinicApp in November 2015. Today, it is worth Rs 50 crore, and among the fastest-growing players in the e-diagnostics space, a position it has reached by bringing affordable pathology tests to doorsteps via its network of trained phlebotomists. “They trust in technology-driven startups, and connect with the services they receive from startups,” says Divya of his clientele, which is largely made up of urban corporate professionals aged between 35 and 65. Meanwhile, outside of India’s metros, KlinicApp is more than happy to accommodate requests for its services. The transition from fintech to health was not an easy decision. It so happened that my father-in-law and sister were very ill with kidney ailments and both had to undergo transplantations. We used to get a lot of blood tests done on a daily basis, and I realised getting in touch with the diagnostics and pathology services was extremely painful. I remember one guy had come to collect blood samples at 6am, and he was neither hygienically dressed nor was he wearing gloves. On top of that, pathology lab and hospital prices used to vary too much, sometimes almost double. Going through all this almost daily, I started researching about it. That’s where the shift in focus started taking place, when I personally underwent problems faced by patients. And that’s exactly the reason I started KlinicApp.One of my learnings from (first startup) RupeeTalk was that whatever is core to the business has to be core to the company. All the skill-sets that are required for the business should be present in the company. That is why we have five co-founders for this app — it is very unconventional but I am going with what I have learnt. The five of us have been able to manage everything, be it technology development or marketing. Lesson two was if you raise capital too soon, there is no innovation and you never learn to manage your business without the capital, then — focusing on innovation and building efficiency comes when you are living with constraints. What we have realised is that data analytics has become very important. Data can be used for the benefit of the consumer. If I know more about a consumer by using AI technology, we will be able to give back more. We will be able to serve you better (using) your health trends, or the area you are staying in. None of the players in this industry is doing this. We are going beyond just sending your medical reports, and this helps consumers in making better health decisions. We are 40%-50% cheaper than the rest of the brands because we don’t have any intermediaries. There is no cost of giving commission to middlemen. That’s the beauty of a technology venture. The way the industry is placed, we are trying to build an online tech-driven plan which is far more cheaper and accessible. We have the same prices for all cities, and certified back-end labs everywhere. We have a pretty simple standard model for the consumer. In the next 10 years, the industry is going to transform for sure, (it will become) more consumer-centric.
