Botched Cataract surgery cases: Probe ordered in supply of suspected contaminated fluid

  • | Saturday | 30th March, 2019

Of these 40 patients, the operations of 24 have been conducted again and others are undergoing conservative treatment. The CMOs have been ordered that they should not use the present lot of medicine. After that in two-three phases, nearly 40 patients had come to PGI Rohtak from districts of Bhiwani, Jhajjar, and Karnal. We believe that if the medicines were contaminated at one place, then there must have been some localised reason behind the same. The Haryana Medical Services Corporation Limited (HMSCL) through which these medicines are procured has also sent the samples separately for inspection.

AMBALA: Haryana health additional chief secretary Rajiv Arora and other concerned officials held a meeting with state health minister Anil Vij at his residence on Saturday with regards to the cases of botched cataract surgeries in different areas of the state.Minister Vij said, “I have ordered probe into the recent cases of cataract surgeries after which some patients had developed some infection and irritation into their eyes. The medicine which was being supplied and our warehouses have been sealed. The CMOs have been ordered that they should not use the present lot of medicine. We believe that if the medicines were contaminated at one place, then there must have been some localised reason behind the same. But as this has happened at three-four places, there are possibilities of some centralised reason behind these contaminations. I have discussed the matter with ACS Rajiv Arora and instructed to probe the cases.”“Amit Jha of medical education has been instructed to provide best possible treatment to the patients admitted at PGI. We have taken steps that this does not happen any further”, said minister Vij.ACS Rajiv Arora said, “This has happened in two phases, firstly at Kurukshetra Hospital from where 24 patients had faced some problems post cataract surgeries and they were referred to PGI Chandigarh where their operations were conducted again. Now, they are recovering well and their vision is also fine. After that in two-three phases, nearly 40 patients had come to PGI Rohtak from districts of Bhiwani, Jhajjar, and Karnal. Of these 40 patients, the operations of 24 have been conducted again and others are undergoing conservative treatment. We hope after the operations, they would also recover soon.”When questioned about action to be taken against anyone who is held responsible, ACS Arora said, “Firstly, we have seized the entire supply of the concerned medicine not only in government hospitals but also in the private sector. We have also informed the Government of India about these incidents. The state drug controllers have collected the samplings which have been sent for inspection. The Haryana Medical Services Corporation Limited (HMSCL) through which these medicines are procured has also sent the samples separately for inspection. After receiving the reports of the samples, we would come to know that which particular medicine was contaminated or had any problem, and the action against the concerned supplier company would be taken.”
