Manas, which was part of the `World Heritage Sites in Danger List` in 1992, has come a long way in conservation to regain its status of World Heritage in 2011.

The good news of an increase in tiger population from Manas National Park in Assam has cheered up forest officials and wildlife enthusiasts. The population of the majestic Royal Bengal Tiger has increased from 30 last year to 46 in 2021. Park Director Amal Chandra Sarma said on Sunday that in 2010 there were only 10 tigers in Manas which increased to 30 by last year and this year the camera trapping census detected 46 tigers.

He said, "16 tigers have increased within a year which is an increase of more than 50 percent, this is a remarkable achievement and it is a sign that the conservation efforts in the park are paying off" Sarma told that among the 46 royal Bengal tiger, 19 are adult tigresses, 16 adult tigers, three sub-adults and seven cubs.

Sarma said, "It is a matter of joy that for the first time, four tigers were seen outside the core area in the first additional zone."

The survey covered forest divisions and wildlife sanctuaries in a phased manner with the camera traps first placed in Bansbari and Bhuyanpara ranges and later at the Kahitama, Panbari, First Addition and Bornadi, he said.
