MG Rd streetscaping hits a speed bump — desilting work

  • | Friday | 22nd September, 2023

Gurgaon: Desilting of the master sewer line on MG Road is likely to hit the pace of the ongoing streetscaping work being undertaken by GMDA.Streetscaping and beautification of the portion between the Sikanderpur Metro Station and IFFCO Chowk started this June and was expected to finish by the end of this year. With 25% of the work completed so far, GMDA officials say that the speed of the project will be hampered by at least three months.Although both the works will be carried out simultaneously, the speed of the project may get slightly affected due to the desilting work. We dont want a situation to arise where we build something which then gets damaged. We should be able to complete the work most probably by March next year, said a GMDA official. The infra-II division of the metropolitan authority is planning to desilt and strengthen the master sewer line along MG Road using cured-in-place pipe technology. This is the first time the GMDA will be carrying out the desilting work on this stretch since its inception.According to the official, GMDA had already floated the tender in July and the work is expected to cost around 18.46 crore. A total length of around 3.8 km on both sides of the road will be cleaned. After allotment of work, it is expected to take at least six month to complete.Since GMDA is already developing this road as the model road, we have decided to undertake the desilting and strengthening of sewer lines on both sides of the road to avoid any pipe settlement or overflowing in the future. With the use of the CIPP method, the life of the sewer pipes increases by another 50 years and desilting will not be required for at least 5-7 years unless there is some intrusion of foreign elements. While we have given the timeline of six months, we will try to complete work before it. At present, we are scrutinizing the bids and hoping to allot the work by next month, said an official with infra-II division.Streetscaping is a first-of-its-kind project in the city, which involves construction of pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, cycle tracks, green spots with a childrens play area, benches, bus stops and vending zones. The project is estimated to cost the GMDA around 11.3 crore.Clearing encroachments will be the projects main challenge as, at present, dozens of illegal vendors with flourishing business still dominate the roadside. We are working on every minute detail including the placement of cobblestone, tiles, benches and landscaping to give a look that is both aesthetically pleasant and functional for residents. There is provision of a dedicated vending zone on the corridor and will install bollards at multiple points to strict entry of illegal vendors, the official added.
