Samples from Nuh test positive for encephalitis, screening on

GURGAON: The National Centre for Disease Control, Delhi and PGIMS Rohtak have confirmed that the samples which were sent from Tauru of Nuh district tested positive for encephalitis. However, there is no epidemic in the area, officials said.The samples which we had sent for examination confirmed that one family member staying in a small area outside a village in Tauru was infected with encephalitis virus, said Dr Rajeev Batish, chief medical officer (CMO) of Nuh.The health department has been carrying out door-to-door surveys and immunisation. They are also planning to mobilise awareness camps in the district about the virus, which spreads from the urine of rodents. We have been carrying out immunisation in the nearby areas and our teams are also checking the vaccine status of children to ensure that they have immunity against the virus, the Nuh CMO added.Symptoms of encephalitis include stiff neck, confusion, agitation or hallucinations, seizures, loss of sensation or being unable to move certain areas of the face or body, irregular movements, muscle weakness, problems with speech or hearing, and loss of consciousness, including coma.Samples were sent out after four children lost their lives to suspected encephalitis in Tauru, while several others were affected in the Dhani area of Chahalka village. The four children began to show symptoms on October 19, and were admitted to different hospitals in Nuh, Alwar and Faridabad. The children belong to one family.The children, who died, were aged between 4 and 7 years. Adnan (4) started vomiting uncontrollably on October 19. He was hospitalised but died within 24 hours. Adnans 7-year-old sister Alisha too started showing similar symptoms on October 21. She was admitted to the Nalhar Medical College, and died within hours. Later, on October 22, two of their cousins — Nazish (4) and Danish (4) — also had symptoms.
