2 pose as tenants, cheat house owner of Rs 44,000 with code

GURGAON: Two men were arrested for allegedly scamming Rs 44,000 from a user who had posted a property for rent on an online marketplace on Monday. The arrests come after a complaint was lodged by Kala Ram (40), a resident of Farrukhnagar, on October 17, 2022. In his complaint, Ram alleged that around Rs 44,000 was swindled from his bank account linked with the e-commerce website when he was about to rent out his apartment to one of the users.ACP (cybercrime) Vipin Ahlawat said that in such cases, the victim lists a product, here it was a property for rent.Fraudsters posing as potential tenants contact the house owner and offer to pay in advance.To initiate the process of conning, the fraudsters further share fake ID cards. In the final stage of fraud, the conmen share a QR code over WhatsApp asking the victim to scan it to receive the payment, said ACP Ahlawat. The ACP further added that in such cases unawareness is the issue. The victim here was not well-versed with the online payment procedure. That is why, despite being a receiver of the money, he ended up scanning the QR code."The accused have been identified as Vishnu (26) from Rajasthan and Rahul (28) from Uttar Pradesh. ACP Ahlawat said that this incident is part of a network of 25 scammers where each person in the group has a specific job. Vishnu made fake bank accounts, Rahul sold them, and others likely played their roles too. The accused have been involved in the crime for the last six months, mentions ACP Ahlawat.To escape being traced, the scammers created a chain of fraud where they kept selling fake bank accounts to circulate the money.
