GURUGRAM: Yet another year of scorching summer, but still no respite from water cuts. It's the same story every summer. But across developer areas, residents are pointing fingers at maintenance agencies for exacerbating their woes.Rising mercury has brought a substantial drop in water supply across Gurgaon, even as residents shell out money to fulfil water needs. Ongoing construction of the underpasses on the Gurgaon-Delhi expressway, lack of enough storage capacity and poor coordination between Huda and MCG are some of the reasons because of which residents are facing acute water shortage Water supply in developer areas is taken care of by maintenance agencies formed by builders. Huda supplies water to the developers, who store it in tankers and supply to residents. But poor storage capacity and insufficient power supply is leading to shortage.Residents in DLF 1-3, Ardee City, Suncity, Sushant Lok 1 and sectors 21 to 23, especially, have complained of insufficient water supply this month. Water needs in these parts of the city are taken care of by respective developers, which, in turn, are dependent on Huda.Suncity, for instance, has been facing recurring shortage for the last six months. But things have gone further downhill in the last 30 days. Residents said they have been getting water in their taps for a mere 10-15 minutes. They have no choice but to shell out money for tankers every second or third day. "We have been facing water shortage for a while now, but the situation has worsened over the past month. There are days when residents have have to go to the community centre for their morning chores," said Pyramid Sharma, RWA secretary of Suncity.A spokesperson for the developers of Suncity, though, countered residents' claims, saying not even a single tanker had to be called in the township. "There is a little shortage from Huda but we are augmenting from borewells. However, I must add 60% of residents are not paying up water charges," said Harinder Kumar, general manager, Suncity developers.A similar situation prevails in DLF phases 1-3. "Even after increasing maintenance charges, DLF is not providing sufficient water in residential areas. It is the same story every summer — people end up paying water tankers for their needs," said R S Rathee, president of Qutub Enclave RWA. Despite repeated attempts, the developer refused to respond. While residents in Ardee City said they have been getting sufficient supply from Huda, frequent power outages are causing a problem. "Groundwater levels in the area are comparatively better than elsewhere. Also, we get sufficient supply from Huda. But power cuts reduce water supply," said T N Kaul, RWA president.Meanwhile, Sushant Lok 1 is facing water shortage, as the maintenance agency, Profac, has failed to pay power bills, as a result of which water boosting pumps are not operating to pump enough water into households. Residents said they have been braving water shortage for over a month now. A spokesperson for Profac told TOI the agency needs residents to pay maintenance for it to clear pending power bills.MCG commissioner V Umashankar had earlier told TOI, "Our long -term plan is to set up a new water boosting station in Sector 22B, which will take a year. We will, in the meantime, make local arrangements to tide over this summer."
