Senior government doctors’ panel to look into Adya’s line of treatment, cost at Fortis

GURUGRAM: The Haryana government on Wednesday changed the composition and redefined the scope of the panel formed to look into allegations of overcharging by Gurgaon's Fortis hospital for the treatment of 7-year-old Adya Singh, who was suffering from dengue and passed away this September.After setting up a district-level committee, the government scrapped it and set up a new one comprising senior government doctors under additional director general (health) Rajeev Vadhera. The other doctors on the committee are director of health services Dr Aditya Choudhry and Gurgaon chief medical officer Dr B K Rajora. Gurgaon district council CEO Chinar Chahal is the other member. The earlier panel was formed under Rajora.Fortis charged Rs 15.79 lakh from Adya's family for her 15-day treatment in the ICU. The Union health ministry had asked the Haryana government to conduct an urgent probe after a friend of the Adya's father wrote a social media post, which later went viral, on how the hospital had charged a huge sum of money for the treatment that included the use of 750 gloves. The hospital has denied these charges and says Adya's family had been updated regularly about the cost and line of treatment and a 20-page itemised bill had been given to them explaining the charges.The committee, set up Haryana principal secretary (health) Amit Jha on the orders of health minister Anil Vij , will check if the hospital overbilled the family and also the line of treatment taken by doctors at Fortis, an official said.A PTI report from Chandigarh quoted Vij as saying the government would not allow private hospitals to loot patients and necessary action would be taken in this regard. The report also said Vij had said he would speak to Union health minister J P Nadda for bringing a legislation under which no private hospital would be able to overcharge patients.(With inputs from PTI)
