Teachers demand action against deputy commissioner over assault

JORHAT: Over 1.6 lakh teachers from more than 60,000 primary schools across the state observed a 'Black Day' on Thursday in protest against the assault on a teacher in upper Assam's Charaideo district allegedly on the orders of the deputy commissioner last Saturday for a fifteen-minute delay in attending a meeting.Ajit Dev, the headmaster of Panbari Lower Primary School , was physically assaulted by personal security officers of Charaideo deputy commissioner Bibekananda Phukan on February 17. "The education minister has ordered an inquiry on the February 17 incident. We demand the government punish the DC within the next 72 hours. We have also decided to stage dharnas in all the district headquarters and subdivisions on February 26 if our demands are not addressed," said ARPSS secretary Ratul Goswami.
