Assam gangrape victim dies; one accused still absconding

GUWAHATI: The Class V student who was gang-raped and set on fire in Assam’s Nagaon district, died on Saturday, Nagaon superintendent of police, Shankar Barata Raimedhi said.Raimedhi said that the two of the three accused who were minors were sent to observation home, while the third one, Zakir Hussain , who is an adult, is still absconding.“We have raided several locations for the third accused’s hideouts and our search is still on. It’s a watertight case. The juveniles then joined in and the three of them later set her on fire.Angry public on Saturday also vandalised the house of Hussain at Lalung Gaon, demanding exemplary punishment for all the accused.The influential All Assam Students Union (AASU) said that the accused still absconding should be nabbed as early as possible and the administration should ensure such “heinous crime” is not repeated.This is the second case in the district since last Thursday, when a 35-year-old woman was gang-raped by eight men in front of her husband. The culprits had waylaid the couple on the pretext of offering shelter for the night after they were stranded in Chaparmukh area due to unavailability of transport.
