Assam BJP MP blames 'particular community' for majority of rapes in state

This trend we are seeing in Assam since last few years and in majority of cases the rapists are from a particular community. There is a need for stringent law which can effectively work as deterrent against rapes, she added.“Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal’s government is working on a strong law to curb crimes against women. In Dhubri, about 300 km from here, a 24-year old Nurjamal was arrested while trying to rape a minor on Thursday. It’s not a matter of politicizing the crime against women,” Chakraborty said.She said it is a matter of serious concern that incidents of rape are on the rise in the state along with other parts of the country. It looks as if raping has become a kind of their birth right.

GUWAHATI: BJP MP from Assam, Bijoya Chakraborty said incidents of rape in the state has increased manifold in last few years, and in majority of the cases people from a “particular community” are involved.The Lok Sabha MP told a press conference here on Friday that rapists should either be hanged or shot, so that such punishments become a strong deterrent against crime against women.“There is not a single day a woman is not raped. Even minors are not spared. This trend we are seeing in Assam since last few years and in majority of cases the rapists are from a particular community. It looks as if raping has become a kind of their birth right. If the rapists are not hanged or shot, they will continue with their crime after remaining in jail for few months,” Chakraborty said.When asked by reporters that even Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked not to politicized rape, Chakraborty said she was not politicizing the “heinous crime”, rather highlighting the fact.“I want to say that rapists are pervert and can belong to any community. It’s not a matter of politicizing the crime against women,” Chakraborty said.She said it is a matter of serious concern that incidents of rape are on the rise in the state along with other parts of the country. There is a need for stringent law which can effectively work as deterrent against rapes, she added.“Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal’s government is working on a strong law to curb crimes against women. I am confident the law will have strong deterrents against rape,” Chakraborty said.Earlier another BJP MP, also from Assam, Ram Prasad Sarmah had said that rapists should be publicly hanged or shot.At least five incidents of sexual molestations of women especially of minors were reported from different parts of the state in last ten days. In Dhubri, about 300 km from here, a 24-year old Nurjamal was arrested while trying to rape a minor on Thursday. On the same day a teacher was arrested also for sexually abusing a Class IX girl student in Lanka area of Hojai district.On Monday Dhiren Rongpi (55) and Jiten Rongpi (53) were arrested for trying to sexually abuse a minor girl at Sonapur in the outskirts of Guwahati, and a woman was raped in Salbari locality of Baksa district, about 85 km from here.Last month a Class V student was gang-raped and set on fire at Lalung Gaon in Nagaon district of central Assam.
