IIT-G intake of girls to rise by 6% to meet Centre's decision

"A total of 57 additional seats have been created at undergraduate level in IIT-G to meet the goal of minimum 14% seats to be earmarked for girls in every undergraduate course in engineering taught at the institute. It further stated that the initiative aims at ensuring that at least 14 percent seats for females in 2018, without reduction in the number of seats to be made available for non-females. "Non-females will compete for seats in gender-neutral vertical only. Females will first compete for seats in female vertical, and if it is full, then in gender-neutral vertical, thereby ensuring that girls are not denied any opportunity due to them on merit," said the letter. "A letter sent by the MHRD to all directors of the IITs recently said the seat allocation has to be done based on two verticals - female and gender-neutral (i.e independent of sex of the candidate) - with all reservations being applicable as per rules in both the verticals.

GUWAHATI: The number of undergraduate seats for girls has been increased by around 6% in IIT Guwahati (IIT-G) this year, with the Centre deciding to fill up at least 14% seats at undergraduate courses in engineering across all the IITs with girl students in 2018.Currently, around 8% girls are pursuing various undergraduate courses at IIT-G.Official sources in IIT Guwahati told TOI that as a result of the significant move taken by the Union ministry of human resource development ( MHRD ) with regard to this year's admission, the IIT-G authority has increased the total number of seats in engineering courses at the undergraduate level in the premier technology institute from last year's 645 to 702 this year."A total of 57 additional seats have been created at undergraduate level in IIT-G to meet the goal of minimum 14% seats to be earmarked for girls in every undergraduate course in engineering taught at the institute. With the creation of additional 57 seats for girl aspirants, the intake capacity of girls during the upcoming admissions in IIT-G has gone up to 105," said a senior official of the institute.The decision to create additional seats for taking up the percentage of girls in undergraduate engineering courses to 14% is a first step to gradually increase the proportion of girls at undergraduate level engineering courses to 20% in 2020, said the official.Welcoming the move to create additional seats for girl students, IIT-G director Gautam Biswas said, "For healthy growth of the knowledge of society, it is important that more girls go for higher education."A letter sent by the MHRD to all directors of the IITs recently said the seat allocation has to be done based on two verticals - female and gender-neutral (i.e independent of sex of the candidate) - with all reservations being applicable as per rules in both the verticals."Non-females will compete for seats in gender-neutral vertical only.
