Assam flood toll 21, nearly 10000 still in relief camps

As on Wednesday, nearly 1,49,150 people have been displaced in floods with 10,000 still in relief camps. "We are providing clean water, food, medicines and also setting up temporary shelter in the affected areas. We will focus on building the resilience of the most vulnerable communities to the recurring floods in these areas," said Oxfam India chief executive officer Amitabh Behar. Most of the camps are located in Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj districts of the Barak valley Train services to the the Barak Valley's Panchgram-Katakhal section have resumed following restoration of tracks damaged by floods.According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), distribution of relief materials has been stepped up in the affected districts. It said 3683.11 quintals of rice, 1893.49 quintals of pulses and 183.03 quintals of salts were distributed among people in the affected districts.However, in view of scarcity of drinking water and fodder for the livestock in the flood-hit Hailakandi district, the district administration has asked the tea garden management to come forward to tide over the crisis.The tea garden management will supply at least 10,000 litres of drinking water through tankers to the affected areas and arrange fodder for livestock.

GUWAHATI/SILCHAR: The death toll in the first wave of floods in Assam increased to 21 on Wednesday with the recovery of one more body from Patharkandi in Karimganj, the worst-hit district, on Wednesday.Of the 21 casualties, 18 died due to drowning and three were killed in landslides.The overall flood situation in the state has, however, improved slightly with the number of people hit by the deluge coming down to nearly 5.15 lakh from 5.64 lakh in Nagaon, Hojai, Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj districts.Barring the Barak river at Badarpurghat and the Kushiyara in Karimganj district, the water lever of other rivers has decreased.The area of cropland hit by floods has also come down to 3,547.65 hectares from nearly 4000 hectares.
