SP in Assam gets 2-year jail for torture

GUWAHATI: A district sessions court in Guwahati on Thursday sentenced Goalpara SP Amitav Sinha to two years' imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 after it found him guilty of torturing a murder accused in custody five years ago. He had gone to interrogate Gurmeet, who was arrested from J&K in connection with the murder of a Guwahati-based businessman, Ajit Singh, in 2012.

GUWAHATI: A district sessions court in Guwahati on Thursday sentenced Goalpara SP Amitav Sinha to two years' imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 after it found him guilty of torturing a murder accused in custody five years ago. The court found Sinha guilty under IPC Section 330 (voluntarily causing hurt to extort confession ).Immediately after the verdict, Sinha obtained bail. His counsel, Angshuman Bora, told TOI , "We have got bail for four weeks to appeal in the high court. There is no material evidence against us. Our stand is that Amitav Sinha had only interrogated the murder accused, who was a charge-sheeted professional killer. He had lodged a complaint that he was tortured in police custody."The Guwahati high court has been monitoring the case in the district sessions court as the incident had triggered an outrage in the city.The murder accused, Gurmeet Singh, in his petition before the court, said he was subjected to torture and was beaten with a hockey stick that caused a fracture in his upper arm. He also alleged that the police poured petrol into his rectum while he was in custody from June 17-18, 2013.When the incident happened, Sinha was additional SP (crime branch) posted in Guwahati. He had gone to interrogate Gurmeet, who was arrested from J&K in connection with the murder of a Guwahati-based businessman, Ajit Singh, in 2012.
