Assam flood situation worsens, 51,000 hit

GUWAHATI: The flood situation worsened on Friday with 51,000 people affected by the flood with more districts in lower Assam engulfed by the deluge on Friday. Officials said erosion is taking place at the rate of approximately 20 meters per day in Biswanath district. At least 43 people in 10 villages at Biswanath and Halem revenue circles of the district have been displaced due to erosion. There has been no report of any fresh casualty on Friday.According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 51,402 people across 85 villages in Nalbari, Barpeta, Chirang, Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji and Majuli districts are now hit by the deluge. About 45000 people were affected by the deluge till Thursday.

There has been no report of any fresh casualty on Friday.According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 51,402 people across 85 villages in Nalbari, Barpeta, Chirang, Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji and Majuli districts are now hit by the deluge. About 45000 people were affected by the deluge till Thursday. A total of 3,743.30 hectare of croplands are still underwater. ASDMA added that Brahmaputra at Nematighat in Jorhat district and its tributary Jia Bharali at North Trunk Road in Sonitpur district were flowing above the danger level on Friday.Lakhimpur continues to be the worst-hit district with over 27,000 people affected, followed by Dhemaji where 21,894 people have been hit by the flood. About 1,500 people are in 21 relief camps now. Till Thursday, there were 548 affected people in five relief camps across Lakhimpur, Chirang and Kokrajhar.At least 32 people, including 15 children, have died in the floods since last month.On the other hand, erosion continued to create havoc across Biswanath, Chirang and Morigaon districts. At least 43 people in 10 villages at Biswanath and Halem revenue circles of the district have been displaced due to erosion. Officials said erosion is taking place at the rate of approximately 20 meters per day in Biswanath district. Erosion is also posing a threat in Aie Poaliand and Burijhar villages of Chirang district while Khandajan and Basanghat villages have been hit by erosion in Morigaon district.Meanwhile, the Union ministry of home affairs said 1,384 personnel of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed in 14 flood-hit states including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Sikkim and Tripura.
