GUWAHATI: BJP on Sunday said it wants the rural polls in the state to be held as soon as possible and has written to the state election commission about the matter. "All our grassroots workers and units have been gearing up for the panchayat election. The state voted Congress out of power because of its gross failure to live up to the aspirations of the people. We want the rural polls to be held as early as possible because we are confident of where we stand," BJP state general secretary Dilip Saikia told TOI.Congress had earlier accused the ruling party of delaying the polls deliberately, sensing "public disillusionment" after four years of BJP rule at the Centre and two years of the party being in power in Assam Rejecting these allegations, Saikia said, "Congress should take care of its own house first, instead of pointing fingers at BJP. "BJP sources said that panchayat election has been delayed the panchayat election as an estimated 60,000 government employees currently engaged in the updating works of National Register of Citizens.Saikia said BJP has attached utmost importance to the rural bodies' polls as the saffron party prepares for the 2019 Lok Sabha election. For BJP, panchayat bodies are the last remaining citadels of the Congress. There are 2,201 village panchayats, 185 anchalik panchayats and 21 zilla parishads in the state.A majority of these bodies have been in Congress's hold after it won the last panchayat election held in 2013.
