Assam rolls out rhino protection force

GUWAHATI: Assam government on Wednesday rolled out an exclusive rhino protection force to protect the animal, which is frequently being killed by poachers for their horns. I urged the new recruits to develop a spirit of discipline, punctuality, dutifulness and commitment to take the protection measure altogether to a great height.”Sonowal announced at a function where the 90 recruits were given appointment letters that in recognition to their duty towards rhino protection, the forces from Special Rhino Protection Force would be given awards.--pk In the current year, already four have been killed.Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Wednesday gave away appointment letters to 90 youth as constables, who will form the crux of Special Rhino Protection Force (SRPF) raised by the state government. Between 2015 and 2017, poachers have killed 74 rhinos in the three natural habitats at Kaziranga, Orang and Manas. Recruitment of the 90 youth as constables through rigorous recruitment process will help in adding teeth to our efforts of rhino protection,” he said.He added, “Protecting rhinos along with other wild lives are our commitment and raising the Special Force is a step towards protecting our rhinos from the scourge of poaching”.The newly recruited constables should maintain constant liaison with the higher ups of the security mechanism of Kaziranga National Park to form a formidable team for the protection of wild lives.Sonowal said, “The government has devised a well laid out mechanism for their training, using latest technology to the appointees for their capacity building.

The national parks and wildlife sanctuaries have their own armed guards and this new force, exclusively for protecting rhinos, which are targeted most by poachers, would act as a force multiplier.The chief minister’s office said that in view of dangers posed by poaching of rhinos, the state government has decided to raise exclusive force from the local youth hailing from the fringe areas of the Kaziranga National Park , which has been inscribed as a UNESCO world heritage site for being the world’s major stronghold of the Indian one-horned rhino, having the single largest population of this species.The force would be exclusively used for Kaziranga National Park, Orang National Park and Manas National Park.Sonowal said that the newly raised force would be a new face of the state government’s efforts towards protection of wild lives in the state especially rhinos and assured all government assistance in empowering force to help them to live up to their mandate.“Strengthening the forest protection mechanism by regular appointments and imparting technical training to employees are essential for sustainable management of forest and environment conservation.
