DIBRUGARH: Hundreds of All Tai Ahom Students' Union (Atasu) activists on Wednesday blocked the NH-61 at Halwating in Sivasagar district, demanding construction of a border outpost (BOP) in the F-sector area near the Nagaland border. Alleging that Naga miscreants, with support from Nagaland police, have been imposing illegal taxes on villagers and forcefully taking away their cattle, the students' body said constructing a BOP would put an end to these practices. The blockade went on from 11am to 1pm, disrupting road communication between Assam and Nagaland, as hundreds of trucks and other private vehicles were left stranded on either side of the highway. NH-61 runs from Kohima , the capital of Nagaland and ends at Jhanji in Assam. The blockade was lifted after the circle officer, along with forces from Halwating and Amguri police stations, arrived on the site. The protesters submitted a memorandum to the circle officer, demanding immediate construction of a BOP at Halwating.Sivasagar president of Atasu, Chandan Gogoi, said, "The Nagaland government has been indirectly supporting miscreants and also opposing Assam government's move to set up a BOP in Halwating. The Nagaland government should stop Naga miscreants from collecting illegal taxes from our villagers. We strongly oppose its interference in the matters of our state." He added, "We demand that a BOP is set up in the area immediately. Unless that happens, we will be forced to launch an economic blockade once again."Border conflict between Assam and Nagaland border have been going on for five and a half decades. Ever since Nagaland was carved out of Assam's Naga Hills district in 1963, it has been claiming that some portions of Assam have "historically" belonged to them. Assam, on the contrary, claims that Nagaland has encroached upon over 66,000 hectares of its land. Both the states share a 434km border, which runs through Jorhat , Sivasagar, Golaghat, Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao districts of Assam.
