Aasu office vandalism prime accused gets bail

GUWAHATI: The Gauhati high court on Tuesday granted bail to Subodh Biswas, president of Nikhil Bharat Bengali Udbastu Samannay Samitee (NBBUSS), who was the prime accused in the alleged vandalism of an All Assam Student Union (Aasu) office at Silapathar last year.On March 6, 2017, Biswas had allegedly led hundreds of NBBUSS activists who damaged the Aasu's local office at Silapathar in Dhemaji district. They were also accused of delivering communally provocative speeches demanding citizenship for Hindu Bangladeshis.Biswas, along with some 50 others, were arrested in connection with the incident.

GUWAHATI: The Gauhati high court on Tuesday granted bail to Subodh Biswas, president of Nikhil Bharat Bengali Udbastu Samannay Samitee (NBBUSS), who was the prime accused in the alleged vandalism of an All Assam Student Union (Aasu) office at Silapathar last year.On March 6, 2017, Biswas had allegedly led hundreds of NBBUSS activists who damaged the Aasu's local office at Silapathar in Dhemaji district. NBBUSS supporters, led by Biswas, allegedly broke the martyrs' column at Aasu office and damaged portraits of Assamese cultural icons, Bhupen Hazarika and Jyoti Prasad Agarwala . They were also accused of delivering communally provocative speeches demanding citizenship for Hindu Bangladeshis.Biswas, along with some 50 others, were arrested in connection with the incident. They stood accused of rioting, unlawful assembly, house trespassing, attempt to murder, mischief and promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth and language. Biswas was arrested on March 22 from the Bajitpur area of North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal , about three km away from India-Bangladesh border.On Tuesday, the high court turned down the state's objection and granted bail to Biswas.Aasu has expressed its displeasure and blamed the state police for not preparing a strong enough case against Biswas. Aasu president Dipanka Nath said, "Though he has been granted bail, we have faith in the judiciary. We hope that exemplary punishment is meted out to him for trying to divide the society along the lines of caste and community. We suspect that the police approached the case casually as a result of which Biswas has got bail."
