Assam man given blood from wrong group, dies

DIBRUGARH: A 75-year-old man died at the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) here on Thursday night after being administered blood of the wrong group during transfusion. On October 11, he had to undergo a surgery and doctors asked his family to arrange one unit of O-positive blood, the blood group of Siddheswar. Accordingly, his family members brought one unit of O-positive blood. The deceased, Siddheswar Moran, is a resident of Bormesai village of Tinsukia district Following the goof-up, AMCH authorities have constituted a high-level inquiry committee to investigate into the incident. The committee has been directed to submit its report within 24 hours.

The victim's son, Akoni , has filed an FIR at the Borbari police outpost situated inside the medical college campus against the AMCH authorities.According to Akoni's complaint, Siddheswar was admitted to the orthopaedics department of AMCH on October 3 after he suffered a hip fracture . On October 11, he had to undergo a surgery and doctors asked his family to arrange one unit of O-positive blood, the blood group of Siddheswar. Accordingly, his family members brought one unit of O-positive blood. After the surgery was over at 1 pm, when the patient was being wheeled into the ICU, someone from his family noticed that the pouch containing blood hanging from the stretcher was marked as B-positive.
