Buses to ply till 3 am in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: The Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) has announced that their buses will ply in and around the city till 3 am on all days of the Durga Puja festival.ASTC managing director Anand Prakash Tiwari said 250 vehicles will ply in the city on all days of the festival. "To make the Puja smoother for the people in and around the city, we have decided to run the bus service till 3 am in the morning. To have public transport system running till late hours will be helpful," said Ranjit Das, a city resident. Besides, there will be 150 buses from sub-urban areas coming to the city," Tiwari told TOI.There will be around 1300 buses under ASTC in service across the state on all days of the festival, he added. Deputy commissioner Virendra Mittal said the district administration and traffic department have arranged for smooth traffic management so that revellers do not face any trouble.

Our buses will travel on all the routes," Tiwari said.With around half of the city's application-based cabs having threatened they will keep their cars off the road during the Puja in protest against the absence of a taxi fare hike, the ASTC's decision to extend bus service has brought relief to many. "If there is no proper transportation facilitated by the district administration, we will have a tough time. We have experienced this in the past. To have public transport system running till late hours will be helpful," said Ranjit Das, a city resident. Deputy commissioner Virendra Mittal said the district administration and traffic department have arranged for smooth traffic management so that revellers do not face any trouble.
