Aasu to lead renewed stir against citizenship bill

GUWAHATI: The All Assam Students' Union ( Aasu ) and 28 ethnic organizations have announced a fresh series of agitation programmes against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 from November 8.The bill, introduced in the Lok Sabha in 2016, seeks to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955 to provide citizenship to illegal migrants, from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, who are of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi or Christian origin. The porous India-Bangladesh border has not been sealed fully and illegal migrants have not been deported as was promised by the BJP before it came to power.

GUWAHATI: The All Assam Students' Union ( Aasu ) and 28 ethnic organizations have announced a fresh series of agitation programmes against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 from November 8.The bill, introduced in the Lok Sabha in 2016, seeks to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955 to provide citizenship to illegal migrants, from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, who are of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi or Christian origin. The bill has met with considerable opposition in the Brahmaputra valley The organizations on Wednesday held an emergency meeting on the bill and related notifications brought out by the Centre to regularize the entry of religious minorities from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Addressing the media after the meeting, leaders of the organizations said they would stage a protest in Dispur to express their anguish against the bill.They added that the 29 organizations would on November 9 go to residences of MLAs and MPs from Assam, seeking their support to oppose the bill and the related notifications that seek to regularize entry of these religious minorities. This will be followed by agitations in district headquarters across the state on November 10 and torch rallies at various locations on November 16, they added.The leaders further continued that after the conclusion of this series of agitations, a public meeting will be convened in Guwahati to finalize the future path of movement to protest against the citizenship bill Aasu chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharyya said, "Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal should clarify his stand on the citizenship issue.
