5 Bengalis gunned down in Assam, Ulfa(I) hand seen

GUWAHATI: At least five persons were killed when some unidentified gunmen fired at a group of people at Kherbari located near the Dhola-Sadiya bridge over the Brahmaputra in Assam’s Tinsukia district on Thursday evening.The deceased have been identified as Ananta Biswas (18), Shyamlal Biswas (60), Abhinash Biswas (21), Subal Das (62) and Dhananjay Namasudra (23) — all Bengali-speaking people.Though no militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack, police did not rule out the involvement of Ulfa (Independent) militants. The nature of the firing points the needle of suspicion points towards Ulfa(I).”Police said some people were sitting at a local grocery shop in the evening when a group of armed men in olive green fatigue arrived at the spot and asked them to come near the river bank. Eyewitnesses said the armed men asked them to line up and then opened fire at them from a close range.Condemning the killing, chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal said, “The perpetrators of the crime would be dealt with firmly.” He has asked state water resource minister Keshav Mahanta, power minister Topon Gogoi, DGP Kuladhar Saikia and ADGP Mukesh Agarwalla to proceed to Kherbari immediately.West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee in a tweet said, “Terrible news coming out of Assam.
