"Unless the teachers get exemplary punishment, our souls cannot be consoled," said Achyut. When the deceased's father approached vice-principal Prasun Goswami, he not only admitted to caning of Mousam by Singh but also justified the same. "He added that the high court has maintained that a suo moto writ petition shall be registered for criminal prosecution of the accused. On being prodded, he told his family that computer teacher Ajoy Singh beat him on the back of his left leg, which was swollen. He added, "the value of my son's life is much bigger than the compensation.

GUWAHATI: Parents of Mousam Raj Mahanta, a Class VI student of Saraswati Siksha Niketan in Kamrup district who died after being allegedly hit by two of his teachers on the school premises in 2010, are still waiting for justice even as the Gauhati high court recently asked the school authorities, the Assam government and the Assam State Legal Services Authority to pay a compensation of Rs 12 lakh to Mausam's family.Achyut Chandra Mahanta, Mousam Raj's father, rued that the accused teachers haven't got punishment for the crimes committed against a schoolkid even after eight years. "Unless the teachers get exemplary punishment, our souls cannot be consoled," said Achyut. He added, "the value of my son's life is much bigger than the compensation. He would have been the backbone of our family."Mausam, who was just 11 years old when the incident took place on May 25, 2010, had returned home from school limping and weeping on that day. On being prodded, he told his family that computer teacher Ajoy Singh beat him on the back of his left leg, which was swollen. He was immediately taken to a local doctor but his condition did not improve. On June 1, an ailing Mousam was admitted to a private hospital in Guwahati where he succumbed to his injuries six days later. When the deceased's father approached vice-principal Prasun Goswami, he not only admitted to caning of Mousam by Singh but also justified the same. An inquiry report submitted by then additional district magistrate of Kamrup on August 16, 2010, corroborates the fact that Mousam was beaten by Singh on the back of his left knee on May 25, 2010, for not doing home work.According to Achyuta , who is also the peitioner, Goswami had also beaten his son the same day.A Khaleque, counsel of the victim's family, said, "While the court has asked Saraswati Siksha Niketan authorities and the state elementary education department to pay Rs 5 lakh each to the parents of Mousam Raj, in the same judgment it directed the state legal services authority to compensate the mother and father of the deceased student with Rs 2 lakh as legal aid."He added that the high court has maintained that a suo moto writ petition shall be registered for criminal prosecution of the accused. The court ruled that from the inquiry report and uncontroverted statements, it is quite evident that the proximate cause of death of the victim was corporal punishment meted out to the victim by then vice-principal of the school, Prasun Goswami, and computer teacher Ajoy Singh.
