Assam University bans stirs without prior permission

SILCHAR: Assam University Silchar on Saturday banned protests inside the campus without prior permission. The area has been tense following rallies by the university students for and against the bill. On last Wednesday, a torch rally was brought out by the students belonging to Assamese and tribal communities in protest against the bill. “The students should be allowed to exercise their democratic rights on issues pertaining to the society. The following day, a rally was organized by the AU students’ council in support of the bill.All Cachar Karimganj Hailakandi Students Association founder president and BJP leader Pradip Dutta Roy criticized the Assam University authorities for imposing ban.

SILCHAR: Assam University Silchar on Saturday banned protests inside the campus without prior permission. The order, issued by the varsity registrar Sanjib Bhattacharjee, stated that “any assemble/procession/dharna or any sort of gathering of people or group of people within the periphery of the university campus without prior approval of the authority is hereby strictly prohibited until further order.”The order further stated that “any unauthorized reporting, if found, henceforth, will be treated as violation of public order and the person or persons involved in such violation will be held responsible as per rules.” The order was issued with the approval of the vice-chancellor, it added.The order comes after the university, over the last week, has turned into a hotbed of protests, both in support of and against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
