Curfew lifted from Imphal districts, mobile internet services resume

Imphal: With the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill set to lapse on June 3 after the Rajya Sabha was adjourned sine die on Wednesday, the indefinite curfew across Imphal East and West districts was lifted on Wednesday. Mobile internet services were also resumed across Manipur . This is a victory for the “non-violent” and “democratic movement” of the people of northeast, particularly Manipur, Biren told a local television channel. MANPAC convenor Yumnamcha Dilipkumar said the outcome is the success of the concerted movement of the people. He added that the government should pay compensation to people who were injured in the protests.

Imphal: With the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill set to lapse on June 3 after the Rajya Sabha was adjourned sine die on Wednesday, the indefinite curfew across Imphal East and West districts was lifted on Wednesday. Mobile internet services were also resumed across Manipur . Normalcy returned in Imphal after the curfew was lifted, with business establishments reopening and transport services resuming.In light of the recent protests and with the Business Advisory Committee intially listing the bill for Tuesday, the curfew had been imposed in the two Imphal districts and mobile internet services suspended since Monday evening.Chief minister N Biren Singh, who is in New Delhi, said that the fact that the bill was not tabled shows that the BJP-led NDA government has utmost concern and regard for the sentiments of the people of the northeast. This is a victory for the “non-violent” and “democratic movement” of the people of northeast, particularly Manipur, Biren told a local television channel. He also gave credit to the movement that was led by Meira Paibis (women vigil groups), students, NGOs and different political parties, said a statement issued by the CM’s secretariat.After the bill was not tabled in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, Manipur People Against Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016 (MANPAC) suspended its protests. MANPAC convenor Yumnamcha Dilipkumar said the outcome is the success of the concerted movement of the people. Addressing reporters at Ima Market in Imphal city where the women vendors have been staging a sit-in since Saturday, Dilipkumar said though protests on the streets would stop for now, the democratic movement against the bill will continue. He added that the government should pay compensation to people who were injured in the protests. He also said the government should now release all the people who were arrested during the protests.Though protests across the five valley districts had continued on Wednesday morning, the agitation was called off later in the day.
