Guwahati: With Asom Gana Parishad ( AGP ) sending feelers that it might reconsider snapping ties with BJP following stalling of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, the saffron party on Wednesday said the central leaders would take a call on reviving the alliance. After the bill was not tabled in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, AGP spokesperson Manoj Saikia had said AGP may bring up in the party platform the issue of reconsidering its ties with BJP. But state BJP leaders have made it clear that the party workers have gathered enough capability to steer the party in the Lok Sabha polls.Last month, AGP president Atul Bora had indicated that the party would discuss reconsideration of ties only if BJP withdraws the bill. AGP walked out of the alliance a day before the bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on January 8. However, Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) is still in the coalition in the BJP-led state government. The acrimony between AGP and BJP peaked in the run-up to the panchayat polls. The panchayat election was fought without any alliance between BJP and AGP. BJP leaders, including chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, had accused AGP of helping Congress in the panchayat polls. AGP president Atul Bora had attacked BJP for bringing a bill that would destroy the state’s identity and culture by giving citizenship to migrants from Bangladesh.State BJP leaders said the victories in panchayat polls and the subsequent autonomous council elections had provided the party’s grassroots workers ample opportunity to mobilize their strength. BJP won these elections when the anti-bill agitation was at its height. A BJP leader said the base created by the party’s grassroots workers in the run-up to the panchayat polls would help BJP in the Lok Sabha polls as well. He added that three lakh-odd pristha pramukhs (page in charge), recruited so far, have added more strength to BJP’s organizational strength.BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass on Thursday said the feedback from party workers is that they are capable to contest LS elections without AGP. “We have about 29 lakh karyakartas (workers) in the state. Over the yearsm they have worked hard for strengthening the party’s organizational base. The series of elections BJP won has given us enough confidence on doing away with the alliance,” Dass had said.
