AIZAWL: Former chief minister Lal Thanhawla on Friday accused the Mizo National Front ( MNF ) government, headed by chief minister Zoramthanga, of having a ‘secret understanding’ with BJP, because of which the state government allegedly put up a ‘weak protest’ against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.Addressing Congress workers at Congress Bhavan in Aizawl on Friday, Lal Thanhawla said the opposition expressed to the bill by the Zoramthanga government “was merely a token one” and not up to the expectations of the Mizo people . “The Mizoram government did not dare go against the wishes of the saffron party,” he said.Alleging that MNF is on BJP’s payroll, the former chief minister said, “The new government is indulging in a spending spree without any efforts at austerity measures, to the astonishment of financial experts. This raises the suspicion that a secret understanding has been reached between BJP and MNF.”Referring to the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lal Thanhawla said it has been a failure on all fronts, especially in its foreign policy. He also said the Modi regime has been “interfering with different autonomous institutions, including the Reserved Bank of India (RBI) and universities,” while failing to create jobs as he had promised.
