22 years after he laid the foundation, Deve Gowda crosses Bogibeel Bridge

DIBRUGARH: Twenty-two years after ex-prime minister HD Deve Gowda laid the foundation stone of the Bogibeel Bridge on the Brahmaputra , he crossed the country's longest rail-cum-road bridge on his way to Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh on Tuesday.Deve Gowda, who served as the 11th Prime Minister of India from June 1, 1996 to April 21, 1997, had laid the foundation stone of the Bogibeel Bridge during his tenure on January 22, 1997. The bridge has solved a major communication problem in the region.”Deve Gowda later left for Pasighat along with the ex-Arunachal PM. After passing some time at the Arunachal Guest House in Mohanbari, the former PM accompanied by ex-Arunachal Pradesh chief minster Gegong Apang and others reached the Bogibeel Bridge by road at 3pm. However it was his successor, PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who kickstarted the construction work of the mega project on April 21, 2002. He will stay at Pasighat before returning to Delhi from Dibrugarh on Wednesday afternoon.

On December 25, 2018, PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the 4.94-km-long bridge connecting Dibrugarh and Dhemaji, ushering in a new era of road connectivity in the region.Earlier, Deve Gowda accompanied by his wife Chennamma Deve Gowda and daughter HD Anusuya, and Janata Dal (S) general secretary Kunwar Danish Ali arrived at the Dibrugarh airport from Guwahati by a SpiceJet flight at 2pm. After passing some time at the Arunachal Guest House in Mohanbari, the former PM accompanied by ex-Arunachal Pradesh chief minster Gegong Apang and others reached the Bogibeel Bridge by road at 3pm. Deve Gowda spent around 45 minutes on the bridge, taking photographs and selfies with visitors.Speaking to reporters, the former PM said, “I have no regrets for not being invited to the inauguration ceremony of the Bogibeel Bridge or because of the fact that my name was not mentioned by PM Modi during the occasion. The scenery is really very beautiful. I enjoyed it. I want the northeast to be on the path of development and I am glad that is happening now. I have witnessed the progress first-hand today. The bridge has solved a major communication problem in the region.”Deve Gowda later left for Pasighat along with the ex-Arunachal PM. He will stay at Pasighat before returning to Delhi from Dibrugarh on Wednesday afternoon.
