GUWAHATI: BJP state president Ranjeet Kumar Dass on Friday said that India can go on to become a superpower only if Prime Minister Narendra Modi is re-elected for another term. He also added that the decision of forming an alliance with AGP once again was taken with the sole purpose of ensuring that PM Modi comes back to power."If India has to become a 'Biswa Guru' (world leader) and a superpower, Modi-ji has to be elected for a second time," Dass said after meeting with Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) members at BJP's headquarters to finalize the seat-sharing arrangement. "We have 29 lakh members. My humble appeal to all our members is that you should not think which candidate is contesting from which seat. Rather you should think that Modi is contesting from all the 14 parliamentary seats. You should work with that spirit," he added.A BJP and AGP delegation left for New Delhi on Friday to meet BJP national president Amit Shah . The seat-sharing agreement will be finalized during the delegation's meeting with Shah, following which the candidates will be announced during BJP's central parliamentary board meeting on Saturday.North East Democratic Alliance (Neda) convener and Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that an exclusive meeting with all the Neda constituents will be held in New Delhi on Sunday to discuss poll strategies. "All the regional parties of Neda arw with us. In some northeastern states, we may contest the polls separately, while in other states we will fight together. However, we all have one strategy and that is to fight to ensure that Modi-ji can come back to power. Only then will northeast witness more development," Himanta said.He pointed out that though AGP may have a different stand from BJP on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, the regional party along with Bodo People's Front (BPF) has agreed to work together with the saffron party to bring Modi back to power. Other parties which are in alliance with BJP in Assam are Tiwa Eikya Mancha, Rabha Joutha Sangram Samiti and Ganashakti."At present, we are not concerned about points of difference (between BJP and its alliance partners) that we may have. We are focusing on unity. In fact, the citizenship bill is not the only issue based on which this election is being fought. There are many other issues and concerns that need to be addressed," Himanta said.AGP founder-president and former chief minister, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, has already slammed the alliance, saying the decision was taken by a handful of leaders without the matter being discussed in the party's general house. Mahanta has said that he is not going to campaign for anyone ahead of the Lok Sabha polls in protest against the AGP-BJP alliance.AGP president Atul Bora, however, pointed out that this was not the first time that AGP has formed an alliance with BJP. "AGP fought together with BJP in the 2001 assembly polls, 2009 Lok Sabha polls and 2016 assembly polls. Now we have come together once again so that we can defeat the Congress,"In 2001 assembly polls, 2009 Lok Sabha polls and in 2016 assembly polls AGP contested the elections in alliance with BJP. Now again in 2019 Lok Sabha polls we have come together so that we can stop the Congress," Bora said.
