Folk artists to promote voter awareness in Nalbari through songs, puppetry

GUWAHATI: A group of 50 women will gather in front of Nalbari Natya Mandir in their best attire for a special marriage ceremony on Saturday. Then they will walk to fetch water from a nearby waterbody as part of the ritual, singing folk songs generally sung on such occasions. However, the entire exercise that resembles a marriage ceremony is in fact Nalbari district administration's innovative voter awareness campaign that will be flagged off on the day."The only difference will be the particular song that will be sung to fetch water will carry the message of voters' rights and how it is essential for our democracy. The songs will be sung with the traditional folk tunes of biya naams (marriage songs), but the wordings will be on voters' rights and on exercising their franchises," Nalbari deputy commissioner, Bharat Bhushan Dev Choudhury said.Dev Choudhury said this time different folk art forms are being used as part of district-wide voters' awareness campaign by roping in over 100 folk artists. "Nalbari has rich heritage of folk art performances like dhuliya, ojha paali, puppetry, biya naam among others. We are using these folk forms to aware the voters and also introduce young generation to our cultural heritage," Dev Choudhury said.Choudhury said present generation will be attracted to experiment with these folk arts when contemporary issues are being reflected through these."The Nalbari administration has planned a series of unique campaign for awareness of voters so that no voter is left out. Scripts and lyrics have been prepared accordingly to promote voters' awareness and free and fair election through dhuliya, puppetry, ojha pali, biya naam, etc." said Dev Choudhury.He also said that after flagging off the awareness campaign from Nalbari Natya Mandir, similar folk performances will be held across the district. "Troupes will visit market places and stage puppetry along with different folk arts on voting. Remote areas where accessibility is difficult will also be covered by the awareness campaign. The campaign will stop two days before the date of polling," Dev Choudhury said.The deputy commissioner also said that Nalbari is a district where three assembly segments falls under three different constituencies - Guwahati, Mangaldoi and Barpeta . "Besides, there are 51 riverine polling stations which are accessible only on boats," he concluded.
